This staircase leads to the Blue Lady Room, a room which even I wouldn't dare to enter alone. The story surrounding the ghost of the Blue Lady is perhaps one of the most disgusting and disturbing of the Berry Pomeroy ghosts, and i really wasn't overly disappointed that i didn't see this one. The shocking story is as follows.
The Blue Lady (whose name i know not) was a resident of the house who is reported to have had an incestious relationship with her own father, had given birth to his baby. The girl was so distressed and disgusted by what her father had done to her, she went mad and murdered the baby. This served to only add to her guilt, that she developed a mental illness and dies shortly after. Her ghost walks around this area of the building, and is commonly seen crying and wringing her hands in dispair. A doctor of torquay, which is where i live, was sent to castle just over a hundred years ago to visit the sick wife of a castle steward. When he was waiting to see her, he encountered a young woman in blue, who seemed distressed and was trying to talk to him. He, believing she was a resident of the house concerned for the sick lady, tried to calm her, but she ran off. As she did, the husband came down and caught a glimpse of the blue lady running off. He became disturbed and warned the doctor that the ghost was a bad omen, and that death would shortly follow. The doctor dismissed the ridiculous story, and diagnosed the woman with a mere cold, and said she would be healed within the week. However, the woman took a turn for te worse and died that very evening. The Blue Lady is the most feared ghost within the ruins, and is still sighted from time to time. However, more commonly, visitors almost always report hearing the cries of a baby around this area. This area to me felt dangerous, and i wasn't going to put myself in any discomfort for the sake of a photograph. So instead, i present the spooky staircase leading down. Can you see anything at the bottom?
Not really sure exactly what ghosts are, but not the first time I've seen after images. I was present when the photos were taken. Just as you describe, the area (a Victorian home in New England) had a strange feel to it at the time (though it had no history, that I know, of being haunted), but didn't see anything until I looked at the photos aferwards. Creepy stuff.
I can't see anything on any of my Berry Pomeroy pictures, and even though i didn't go for any purpose (school, or photography etc.) rather than an adventure it was a bit disappointing. However, i have seen distored figures on other images i've taken in other less-haunted places whereas other people can't see even though i point it out to them, so i believe you completely. There's a difference between seeing and feeling, cos i remember standing here alone there while everyone walked off, and even though i wanted to see what was down there, my body just wanted to follow everyone else. There was definately something down there...eek!
